New Year, New You!!

...So! It’s time to ring in another new year and, therefore time for some more new year resolutions. What’s in store for you for the new year?! There’s nothing like that feeling of a brand new you and a kick-butt new attitude. However, there is a right way to go about it and a wrong way.

How many times have we busted out a crazy, inspirational “new me” list of New Years resolutions only to fail miserably and just end up feeling disappointed in ourselves. I know I’m guilty! The key to successfully conquering the new year is to come up with a fool proof plan for achieving sensible, attainable goals. So here are some Do’s and Don’ts for grabbing the bull by the horns in 2014!

Do: Write down your goals. It’s easy to talk a big game at the start of the year, but we all get busy and it’s easy to lose sight of your goals. Also, break down those big goals into smaller steps  that you need to take in order to get there so it’s not so overwhelming.

Don’t: Get too crazy and overwhelm yourself with unattainable, unrealistic goals. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. You’ll only set yourself up for disappointment. However, Don’t undermine yourself, either. You know what you’re capable of. Push yourself beyond your comfort zone. That’s the only way to grow! Don’t be afraid to fail- you’ve got this!

Do: Set deadlines! This is SUPER important. You need to hold yourself accountable and keep yourself on track. Set realistic deadlines for specific goals and make sure to prioritize your time accordingly. And hey...give yourself a little reward when you meet those goals, whether it be a night out, some shopping, a spa day....whatever floats your boat! You deserve it! So long as you’re staying on track.

Don’t: compromise other important aspects of your life (work, family time, other obligations) to fulfill personal goals. Find time to create a balance in your life without sacrificing other important duties.

Do: Set at least one goal in each aspect of your life. Don’t neglect your personal life to fulfill a career goal or vice versa. It is vitally important to keep a balance in your life. It takes time to find this balance, but it will come. The benefits of setting goals in each aspect of your life ( your career, family life, health, spirituality, relationship with yourself) will become apparent immediately and each aspect effects another.

Don’t: Forget to set a goal that’s just for fun. Don’t make your resolutions all about obligatory matters or it will just seem like a monotonous chore. Set some fun goals too! Spend more time with friends and family, start a hobby you’ve always wanted to take part in, become a master cook, get your groove on out on the dance floor or take up a sport. Do something that makes you happy!

Do: Forgive yourself! Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up. We all do it! It’s certainly not just you. Shake it off and pick it up again. Life is a learning experience and there is always room for improvement. You live, you learn, and you have fun while doing it! So let’s make some goals, and kick some serious butt in 2014!!!!! Here’s to a fabulous new year!
